# Alerts

Set up organization-wide rules to target groups of monitors to raise alerts in specific channels.

Alerts is the rule-based system that routes Data Quality incidents to Slack, Email, Webhook, or MS Teams. It replaces the old model where notification settings lived on each monitor individually — instead, org-wide rules decide who gets notified and when, so a single rule change can cover thousands of monitors at once.

Viewing alert rules requires the **Manage Alerts** View permission, and creating, modifying or deleting them requires Edit. Your administrator grants both through the [Data Quality V2 module-based policy](/group-access-policies/module-based-policies.md#data-quality-v2).

### Who this guide is for <a href="#who-this-guide-is-for" id="who-this-guide-is-for"></a>

Data governance users — data stewards, governance leads — configuring alerts themselves, with no engineering background assumed.

### What this guide covers <a href="#what-this-guide-covers" id="what-this-guide-covers"></a>

* How an alert rule is put together, and the concepts behind it
* How to build a rule step by step, exactly as it appears in the rule builder
* How rule evaluation actually behaves, including what happens when more than one rule matches
* Worked examples covering the most common routing patterns
* How to manage rules day to day, and a troubleshooting checklist for "why didn't I get alerted?"

### How to use this guide <a href="#how-to-use-this-guide" id="how-to-use-this-guide"></a>

Read **How alert rules work** first — it explains Rule, Trigger, Scope, Filters, and Actions once, so the step-by-step walkthrough that follows makes sense without re-explaining each term. Then use **Worked examples** as templates for common patterns you can adapt.
